Madelyn's first 3 weeks

Little Maddy is staying little maybe too long.  At her two week check up she weighed 6lbs. 13 oz.  At birth she was 7lbs. 2oz. It's normal to loose up to 10 percent of their body weight in the first few days of life but she should have regained it by her two week appointment. She was throwing up in the first couple weeks after eating but has since stopped that almost completely. Now she only throws up maybe once a week and only if you don't burp her after eating.  She also has nearly  doubled the amount she eats and the frequency. I stepped on the scale with out her and then again with her to figure out her weight which is about 7lbs and 4 or 5 oz so she is gaining weight slowly but surely.

Welcome baby Madelyn!!

Just as I expected, she came unexpectedly! My c-section was scheduled for December 27th, 2008.  My mom, Katie and Morgan were to fly in the day before to help take care of Savannah while Jason and I were in the hospital.  We had a very white Christmas which is rare for Seattle, we had record breaking amounts of snow. It was awe full! The entire week of Christmas I was terrified that that I'd go into labor.  They only  plow some roads and they don't use salt so the snow sat on the roads for over a week! Some roads  were better than others.  Neighborhood streets were the worst (including ours).  Jason has 4 wheel drive but for some reason it wasn't working.  His car is rear wheel drive so it didn't do well in the snow.  My car was just as bad because it has fancy racing tires which translates to car ICE SKATES.  So may car didn't budge for almost two weeks.  Poor Jason spent an hour in the freezing cold working on his car to fix his 4 wheel drive.  He managed to fix it a couple days before Christmas! I was so relieved that we would be able to make it to the hospital safely!  Christmas came and went very fast, it was a good one, Santa brought lots of goodies to all of us but we didn't have much time to enjoy them... 6 am the day after Christmas I woke up to take my usual morning pee and I was already wet!  I ran to the bathroom and relized my water had broken and while it didn't gush, I definately had a stead flow leaking out.  I woke Jason up hollering from the bathroom "wake up! it's time!!"  Everytime I tried to stand up, it would leak out and it's a weird feeling, kind of feels like you are peeing your pants.  We called Stephanie and we were going to drop Savannah off at her house since obviously my family hadn't flown in yet.  Steph's roads and apartment complex were really bad and the her place is further from the hospital than our house.  We decided not to chance getting stuck at her house and we tried to call Natalie and Micah who live less than a mile from us.  No answer. Crap, we had to find someone to watch Savannah, I didn't want to have the c-section with out Jason!  Jason called his parents, his dad and brother offered to drive down.  They lived about 30 minutes from the hospital but it would take an hour for them to make it since the roads were bad for them too.  We got to the hospital at 7:30 am.  I was admitted and they determined my water had definitely broken.  Jason's dad and brother made it to the hospital just in time.  Santa brought Savannah a V-smile Cyber pocket that she happily played the entire time it took us to get admitted and thru the surgery. (thanks santa).  During the walk from the triage to the operating room at about 9 am, i felt very nauseous, probably from the sour tasting acid neutralizer that they made me drink . While waiting for the elevator, I began to throw up.  I realize nurses and doctors see these things all the time but I was still rather embarrassed to be throwing up in a garbage bag in front of everyone and right outside other patients rooms.  I was also very scared that I would throw up during the surgery. How do you do the Heimlich maneuver to someone laying down and cut open?  This worried me greatly.  But I did feel better.  They gave me a spinal which is much faster acting than an epidural.  The surgery went thru without any problems ( I didn't throw up) and Madelyn Rose came into this world at 9:32 am weighing in at 7lbs 2oz, 20 1/4 inches long.  My family flew in from Utah later that day and took Savannah while we recovered in the hospital.  The hospital stay went well except little Maddy had a hard time keeping food down, she would forcefully throw up about every other feeding.  The doctors said this is normal for a baby born via c-section as sometimes they have fluid in their tummies that would normally be squeezed out during a vaginal birth.  She didn't throw up any more afterwards but when she was 10 days old (today) she threw up twice.  Both times she threw up breastmilk and both times were about an hour after eating.  She has a doctors appointment in a few days so I will ask about it then.  Photos to come soon!!
